A typeface for a dystopian world

Challenge

M2021 is a sans-serif typeface designed for a dystopian future. Inspired by artistic depictions of dystopia—such as Blade Runner 2049, Metropolis, and 1984—the typeface embodies the stark, futuristic essence of these works.

A specimen book was also produced, featuring photography of enlarged 3D interpretations of the characters. These visuals capture the brutalist aesthetic associated with cyberpunk cinema, reinforcing the typeface’s bold and uncompromising design.

To capture the essence of the typeface’s references, I designed the ‘M2021’ letterforms and brought them to life using a 3D printer. I then sculpted the models with a textured concrete spray, giving the characters the appearance of a cityscape. Finally, I photographed the finished forms to encapsulate the ambition and spirit of M2021 in its final expression.

Following the creation of the physical characters, a specimen book was created in order to document the rationale and process of the project.
